Chin liposuction typically refers to liposuction of the submental region; the area beneath the chin that extends to meet the jawline and neck. During this surgery, we use liposuction to remove unwanted fat deposits by suctioning them away. By precisely sculpting the submental region, we can help patients achieve a more defined chin and jawline and an improved facial profile. Chin liposuction is occasionally performed in conjunction with a facelift or neck lift for more comprehensive lower face rejuvenation and/or with the introduction of a chin implant for greater definition. We also offer non-surgical radiofrequency treatments that can help with tightening the skin after the neck has undergone liposuction.
Who is a good candidate for chin liposuction?
In general, liposuction is not intended to be a substitute for weight loss, but rather a tool we can use to improve the contours of specific areas of the body. Candidates who are already close to their ideal weight will benefit the most from chin liposuction. Many patients have genetic ‘lipodystrophy’ in their neck in spite of an appropriate body weight and lifestyle. If you are bothered by fat deposits below your chin when your face is at rest, or feel there is a lack of definition between your jawline and your neck, chin liposuction could be a good option for you. You should be in good overall health before pursuing cosmetic surgery.

What will my chin liposuction surgery be like?
Submental liposuction is performed under sedative anesthesia in our fully accredited in-house operating facility and takes approximately one hour. Small incisions (typically less than a centimetre in length) are made near the area of lipodystrophy (excess fat) and tumescent fluid is injected to aid in fat cell removal. A cannula is then used to suction out the fluid and the fat. Following surgery, our attentive medical team will monitor your initial recovery in the calm, comfortable setting of our in-house recovery room. You may be asked to wear a neck garment for a few weeks after the procedure.

How long is the recovery from chin liposuction?
Our nurses will see you in-clinic for postoperative care typically 7-10 days after surgery, and subsequently as needed to support your recovery journey. Mild to moderate bruising, swelling, and discomfort is normal after liposuction. Your nurse will assist you with incision care, suture removal, and assessment of the surgical site; and will advise you on long-term care and expectations. You must refrain from strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, and any activities where your head is below your heart for about 2-3 weeks after surgery.
As with any surgery, the healing process can vary from patient to patient and your final results will depend on many individual factors. It is important to be patient with your body and allow yourself time to rest and recuperate. Liposuction can take many months to fully heal and settle, and your results may continue to improve for up to a year.

Our skilled surgical team prioritizes your safety and meticulously works to minimize these risks.
CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical treatment that can provide targeted fat reduction, including in the submental region. While CoolSculpting treatments have the benefit of no downtime, note that this option typically offers more subtle improvements than what can be achieved with liposuction.
