Mommy Makeover

Surgical

A mommy makeover typically comprises multiple procedures in a single surgery to address the changes to the body that can occur as a result of pregnancy or breastfeeding. Pregnancy can result in skin laxity in the abdominal area and/or rectus diastasis, a separation of the abdominal muscles that does not fully come back together post-pregnancy. These conditions can both be addressed with a tummy tuck. Changes to the breasts are also common, and their size and shape can be restored or enhanced with a breast augmentation, breast lift, or combination of both.

Who is a good candidate for a mommy makeover?

You may be a good candidate for a mommy makeover if you have reached a stable weight, close to your ideal, but have persistent breast and abdomen concerns such as loose skin and deflated or sagging breasts. Many women choose to wait until they are finished having children before having a mommy makeover to best maintain the results of their surgery. Your surgeon will discuss these details and create a tailored surgical plan for you.

What will my mommy makeover surgery be like?

Mommy makeover surgery is performed under general anesthesia in our fully accredited in-house operating facility. Incisions for a breast lift typically encircle the areola and extend vertically down the lower portion of the breasts. For a tummy tuck, an incision is typically made along the lower abdomen, discreetly placed below the bikini line. Excess skin and fat are then carefully removed, abdominal musculature is repaired if needed, and breasts are repositioned with implants placed depending on your treatment plan.

How long is the recovery from a mommy makeover?

Following surgery, our attentive medical team will monitor your initial recovery in the calm, comfortable setting of our in-house recovery room. As mommy makeovers are highly individualized treatment plans, your specific recovery guidelines and timeline may vary.

For the first three to five days post-surgery, it is essential to have a responsible adult to assist you with daily activities like meal preparation, mobility support, and incision care. Most patients will have drains in place initially, and a supportive garment (binder) will be provided to aid in the healing process. Strenuous physical activity, heavy lifting, and excessive use of the abdominal muscles and/or pectoral muscles (depending on the procedures you have had) should be avoided for about six weeks. Most patients return to non-strenuous work within four to six weeks and gradually resume their normal activity levels.

You will visit our clinic for postoperative care with our nurses typically one to two weeks after surgery and subsequently as needed to support your recovery journey. As with any surgery, the healing process can vary from patient to patient and your final results will depend on many individual factors. It is important to be patient with your body and allow yourself time to rest and recuperate.

Your Questions Answered

We strive to ensure our patients are thoroughly informed and equipped with the resources they need to make the best decision for themselves. Your consultation will include a discussion of your goals, your health history, education on your procedure(s) of interest, and a detailed explanation of potential benefits, risks, and complications. Your surgeon will perform a full exam of the proposed surgical area. We will demonstrate and discuss the types of implants available. You will also have the opportunity to explore your potential results using our advanced VECTRA® 3D simulation technology. For more information, you can also review our guide to the surgical process from consultation to recovery.

Prior to booking, you should ensure you have a responsible adult available to care for and assist you after surgery. This includes preparing meals, caring for your pets or children, cleaning, and assisting with postoperative care. You must be accompanied for at least 48 hours following your procedure, and we recommend having someone there to help for the first week and to drive you to your post-op appointment(s).

As with any procedure, post-operative complications after a mommy makeover are rare but possible. Depending on your treatment plan, these may include bleeding, blood clots, infection, seroma, asymmetry, contour abnormalities, capsular contracture, rippling of implants, rupture of implants, delayed healing, unsatisfactory scarring, asymmetry of breast shape or size, fat necrosis, loss of the nipple areolar complex, and the potential need for revisional surgery. Our skilled surgical team prioritizes your safety and meticulously works to minimize these risks. You may experience altered sensations such as numbness or tingling for several weeks or months, which are normal and should resolve with time.
