Many of us have areas of fat we are bothered by or self-conscious about, but may wish to avoid surgery when seeking a solution to these concerns. CoolSculpting® is a Health Canada approved, non-surgical alternative to liposuction without any incisions, needles, or downtime. CoolSculpting® is not intended as a means to reduce your overall weight, but rather offers targeted body contouring to support you in achieving your aesthetic goals. It works by delivering low temperatures to your desired treatment areas and activating a process called cryolipolysis. Because fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than skin, they can be destroyed and broken down without causing damage to your skin or other tissues.
As a clinic offering both CoolSculpting® and Liposuction, our experienced team is equipped to advise patients in choosing the most suitable treatment to achieve their treatment goals.

What does CoolSculpting® treat?
CoolSculpting® reduces subcutaneous fat in places where it can be difficult to eliminate, even with our best efforts at a healthy diet and regular exercise. This type of fat is usually the pinchable, fluffy, jiggly type of fat located directly under the skin. We can use CoolSculpting® to reduce fat deposits along the stomach, back, bra band area, chest, flanks (the sides of the abdomen), beneath the buttocks, upper arms, thighs, and submental area (beneath the chin). In the weeks that follow your CoolSculpting® treatment, your body gradually processes the dead fat cells and eliminates them from your body naturally.
How long do CoolSculpting® results last?
CoolSculpting® is a long-lasting fat reduction technology. We most commonly recommend two or more treatment sessions to reach your body contouring goals. Because your body needs time to eliminate the dead fat cells, CoolSculpting® results are not immediate. Final results usually take shape around two to four months following treatment, though individual results will vary. By the six month mark, CoolSculpting® typically reduces the number of fat cells in the treatment area by an average of 25 to 27 %. To preserve your newly contoured results, you’ll need to maintain a stable and healthy weight.

Your Questions Answered
On your treatment day, we’ll walk you through the process so you know exactly what to expect at each step. We prioritize your comfort and welcome you to bring up any questions or concerns you may have.
After marking the areas to be treated, your provider will apply the paddle-like CoolSculpting® applicators against your skin. The applicators will “squeeze” your fat, pulling it inwards with a vacuum-like force while delivering precisely controlled cooling. During your treatment, you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and/or cramping at the treatment site. These sensations typically subside as the area becomes numb. Appointments can take anywhere from one hour to five hours depending on the size and number of areas being treated, and you can read, work, or relax during this time.
After treatment, most patients can immediately return to work and daily activities. You may feel tingly, tender, or itchy in the treatment area. You may also experience some temporary redness, swelling, blanching, or bruising. Some patients experience a sensation of fullness in the back of the throat after treatments below the chin and jawline.
No, untreated areas will have no change in fat cell distribution because fat cells do not migrate to other areas of the body.
Although we only offer treatments with excellent safety profiles, CoolSculpting® is still a medical procedure that carries a certain amount of risk, and it’s important to us that patients are fully educated on their treatment of interest so they can make an informed choice. Although the majority of patients do not experience complications, potential risks include:
- Discomfort: The suction of the vacuum applicator may cause sensations of deep pulling, tugging, pinching, or pressure. You may experience intense stinging, tingling, or aching or cramping as the treatment begins. These sensations generally subside as the area becomes numb.
- Swelling, tenderness and bruising: These symptoms can occur in the treated area and may last for up to 2-3 weeks.
- Numbness: This can occur in the treated area and may last for several weeks after your procedure. Other changes including deep itching, tingling, numbness, tenderness to touch, pain in the treated area, strong cramping, muscle spasms, aching and/or soreness have also been reported after CoolSculpting® procedures.
- Late onset pain: This may occur 2-5 days post treatment and can last up to 4 weeks.
- Paradoxical hyperplasia: A small number of patients have experienced gradual development of a firmer enlargement of the treatment area, of varying size and shape, in the months following the treatment. If such paradoxical hyperplasia occurs, it will be distinguishable from temporary swelling and will likely not resolve on its own. The enlargement/lump can be removed by means of a surgical procedure such as liposuction.
- Treatment area demarcation: A small number of patients may experience excessive fat removal in the treatment area, resulting in an unwanted induration.
- Non-responders: Less than 1% of patients who are treated with CoolSculpting® may be non-responders.
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: Rarely, a transient pigmentation may occur in the treated area and normally resolves within 3-13 months of treatment.
- In rare cases: Hardness, discrete nodules, and frostbite have been reported in treatment areas.
You are not a candidate for CoolSculpting® if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have significant weight to lose, CoolSculpting® may not be right for you as it is not a weight loss procedure. You should not have a CoolSculpting® treatment if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, or areas of impaired peripheral circulation. It is important that you inform our team prior to treatment if you have any medical conditions, including pre-existing hernia and any known sensitivities or allergies, or if you have recently undergone surgery.
Patients seeking higher volume fat reduction may wish to explore liposuction as a surgical body contouring alternative.
