Morpheus8

Medical Aesthetics
Clinic-805-Victoria-Morpheus8-Microneedling

Morpheus8 is a unique treatment that combines several modalities to remodel the appearance of your skin from within. Tiny gold plated needles are gently pulsed into your skin, harnessing the effects of microneedling as your skin’s natural healing mechanisms are triggered and channeled towards the areas that need rejuvenation. At the same time, fractionated radiofrequency energy is directed into the subdermal tissue, stimulating collagen and elastin replenishment as it heats and tightens the skin. Following a series of treatments, your skin will begin to radiate a healthier, fresher, and more youthful appearance.

What does Morpheus8 treat?

We can treat both the face and body with Morpheus8, often as a complement or alternative to surgical procedures that require more downtime. This can be a highly effective option for patients looking to treat multiple signs of aging or skin damage in the face and neck, including fine lines, wrinkles, rough texture, dark spots, and laxity, i.e. skin that is no longer as tight and elastic as it once was. With its rejuvenative properties, Morpheus8 can improve the appearance of depressed scars, such as those left behind by acne. Morpheus8 can also improve the appearance of wrinkles, laxity, and scarring on the body, including the décolletage, arms, abdomen, back, buttocks, and thighs.

How long do Morpheus8 results last?

To ensure optimal results, we almost always recommend Morpheus8 as a series of three treatments, scheduled four weeks apart. Your results will continually improve in the months following your initial series. The improvements in your skin quality may remain noticeable for years, although we recommend that you return for a maintenance treatment every 3-6 months to best preserve your skin’s radiant, healthy rejuvenation. We also highly recommend embarking on a daily regimen of medical grade skincare such as ZO® Skin Health, including the use of minimum SPF 30 sunscreen year-round, to protect your skin from future sun damage and collagen breakdown.

Your Questions Answered

Morpheus8 is an easily tolerated in-office treatment. On your treatment day, we’ll walk you through the process so you know exactly what to expect at each step. You will be administered medications and a numbing cream will be applied to your skin one hour prior to the treatment to help keep you comfortable. You will need a trusted adult to drive you home following the procedure. You may experience a minor degree of a warm, snapping sensation during the treatment. We’ll take pre- and post-treatment photos to document and monitor your skin’s transformation.

You can expect some redness and minimal puffiness of the skin following your treatment, which typically lasts 1-3 days. This may last longer if we are tailoring your treatment to be more aggressive; your provider will discuss this with you in advance. We suggest treating your skin as if you have a mild sunburn during this time and skincare products will be provided for post treatment care. Refrain from Retin-A or products with glycolic acid for at least a week after your treatment. You’ll be able to wear makeup three days after your treatment.

Although we only offer treatments with excellent safety profiles, Morpheus8 is still a medical procedure that carries a certain amount of risk, and it’s important to us that patients are fully educated on their treatment of interest so they can make an informed choice. Although the majority of patients do not experience complications, potential risks include:

  • Discomfort: Although we prioritize your comfort, each patient has a unique experience and it’s possible you may feel some discomfort during the treatment.
  • Bruising: It is rare to experience bruising from Morpheus8. We recommend avoiding aspirin (ASA), ibuprofen, and other blood-thinning medications prior to the treatment, if possible, to minimize the chances of bruising.
  • Skin injury, infection, and scarring: Uncommonly, a skin wound such as superficial blistering or scabbing can occur. These heal within 2-14 days, and use of an antibiotic ointment on a regular basis usually results in normal healing. There is a less than 0.5% possibility of a skin wound leaving behind a permanent scar. It is rare for an infection to occur since the skin is not usually broken.
  • Microcrusting: You will notice small pinpoint crusts throughout the treated area. Over a period of 2-7 days, these microcrusts will begin to slough off. You may also experience some peeling of the skin. Do not use any exfoliants or pick at the microcrusts, as this could lead to a skin injury.
  • Sun sensitivity: Proper sun protection with a minimum SPF 30 physical sunblock, such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, is important, as your skin will be more sun sensitive than usual for one month post-treatment.

Morpheus8 is not right for you if you are pregnant, have been on Accutane® within the past six months, or have an active cold sore. Let your provider know about any oral or topical medications that you are currently using prior to treatment, as some medications may increase your risk of bleeding and will affect your candidacy. You should also advise your provider of any medical conditions, including poorly controlled endocrine disorders such as diabetes or thyroid dysfunction, cardiac disorders, sensory disturbance, any immunosuppressive diseases, or if you have a history of skin disorders such as keloids, abnormal wound healing, or skin cancer. Patients with pacemakers, metal implants, or internal defibrillators should not have this procedure.

If you are tanned, or have recently been exposed to the sun in the area to be treated, you may be more susceptible to potential side effects, such as blisters or crusts. We may need to reduce the intensity of your treatment or postpone it until your tan fades. You should advise your provider of any laser treatments, facial dermabrasion, facial resurfacing, deep chemical peels, facial surgery or injectable procedures you have undergone within the past year.

This treatment can be combined with IPL, a light-based skin treatment that reduces sun damage and redness. We also sometimes use Morpheus8 in conjunction with liposuction in our OR to aid in fat remodelling and enhance surgical results.
