Say goodbye to painful waxing and tedious shaving, and hello to lasting smooth skin with safe and effective laser hair removal. A series of laser hair removal treatments can reduce hair from many areas of the face and body including the face, chest, and underarms. It can also be used to treat sensitive areas such as the nipples and bikini line. We use the latest laser technology that is compatible with patients of all skin tones. Laser hair removal only works on dark hair; patients with red, blonde, or gray hair will not be good candidates for this treatment.

What does laser hair removal treat?

At Clinic 805, we offer laser hair removal treatment of smaller areas including the face, arms, underarms, chest, nipples, and bikini line. The benefits of laser hair removal treatments include the reduction of the numbers of hairs in the treated area, thinning of the hairs, and slower growth overall.

If hormones are suspected in the case of female facial hair growth, it is recommended to have hormone testing completed since laser hair removal will not reduce hair growth. Repeated maintenance may be necessary if hormones are stimulating the hair growth. This applies to patients who have been diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

How long do laser hair removal results last?

Most areas require a minimum of 6-10 treatments; this number could vary depending on your individual needs. Laser hair removal treatments should be scheduled 6-12 weeks apart. Because the hairs in the treatment area will be in various stages of growth at any given time, multiple staggered treatments are necessary to target all hairs sufficiently.

Different skin and hair types can respond differently to laser hair removal. On average, between 70-80% of patients who have undergone treatment report a noticeable overall reduction in hair growth, and 10% will be non-responders.

Your Questions Answered

During your initial consultation, we will thoroughly assess your skin and hair type to determine the best treatment plan for your desired outcome.

On your treatment days, it will be necessary to have one to two days’ worth of growth so that the areas that require treatment can be easily targeted. You may experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation as the laser glides across the skin targeting unwanted hair.

Although we only offer treatments with excellent safety profiles, laser hair removal is still a medical procedure that carries a certain amount of risk, and it’s important to us that patients are fully educated on their treatment of interest so they can make an informed choice. Although the majority of patients do not experience complications, potential risks include:

  • Discomfort: Light-based and laser treatments are very well tolerated office treatments. You may experience a minor and tolerable degree of heat or snapping sensation with each laser or pulsed light treatment.
  • Skin wounds: It is rare for light-based and laser treatments to cause a blister. This risk increases with darker skin types and tanned skin. If a blister or skin does develop, it may take approximately 5-10 days to heal. In extremely rare instances it may leave a noticeable whitening or darkening (hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation) of the skin, or a scar.
  • Infection: Laser treatments use beams of light that do not cut into the skin and therefore infection is exceedingly rare. Infection can occur from skin injuries such as a blister.
  • Scarring: This occurs in less than 0.1% of cases. If you develop a wound and a scar, the scar may end up being flat and white (hypotrophic), large and red (hypertrophic), or even large and extend beyond the margins of the injury (keloid). Subsequent treatment or surgery may be required to improve the appearance of the scar.
  • Pigment change: Areas of hypopigmentation (lighter than surrounding skin) or hyperpigmentation (darker than surrounding skin) are very uncommon occurrences. In the event this does occur, they can be treated with prescription cream, chemical peels, or further laser treatments. There is a less than 1% possibility that this would become permanent. There is an increased risk of this with tanned or naturally darker skin types. You will need to avoid sun tanning as well as tanning lotions or artificial tanning treatments for at least 3-4 weeks prior to your treatment.

Patients with light-coloured hair, including red, blonde, or gray hair, will not be good candidates for this treatment as the laser will not be able to target the hairs effectively.

Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding or who have been on Accutane within the past three months are not candidates for laser hair removal. You should advise us of all oral and topical medications that you are currently using prior to treatment, as some medications are photosensitizing and laser treatment should not be performed while you are taking such medications.

Alternative treatments to laser hair removal include shaving, waxing, or electrolysis.
